Food adulteration happens when something is added to food to lower its quality while increasing its quantity. This harmful substance is called an adulterant. Adding adulterants can be intentional or accidental, but it is often done on purpose to make more profit at the cost of people’s health. Food adulteration is a big issue in our country, and it affects almost every food item, from vegetables to milk, fish to meat, and even biscuits to juice. Some adulterants, like stones, leaves, or soil, get mixed in during farming because of poor cleaning. These are visible and can be removed by consumers, making them less harmful. However, other adulterants are hidden. They are cleverly mixed to match the food’s color or texture, making them hard to spot. These invisible adulterants are dangerous and can cause serious health issues like cancer, diarrhoea, or dysentery.
Adulterated food weakens the body and increases healthcare costs. Regular consumption can lead to both minor and severe health problems, ruining lives. People are aware of the risks but still eat these foods, thinking they have no choice. Restaurants and hotels also serve such food, adding to the problem. The government is taking steps to fight this issue. Mobile courts are set up to catch and punish those responsible. Some people are also trying to avoid adulterated foods. However, these efforts are not enough. Both the government and the public must work together to stop food adulteration. It is a social crime that harms everyone’s health and must be eliminated to ensure a healthier society.
